Earthquake in Iran, new tremor in the North-West


Two earthquakes, measuring 6.4 and 6.3 on the Richter scale, hit the western Azerbaijan province on 11th August causing significant damage. The epicentres of these quakes were 60 km and 49 km from Tabiz city. Further shocks have been experienced and a 5.3 magnitude tremor, with its epicentre 13 km from Varzeghan, was registered in the same region on Tuesday 14th August.


According to official sources, 306 people have died, over 3,000 have been injured and around 5,000 have lost their homes.
