Is your child travelling without you this summer?

Children and young adults are travelling independently earlier and earlier. This means that parents have difficult decisions to make, which begin with actually allowing a child or young adult to travel without them; agreeing on the destination, accommodation and transport method and if they are given the opportunity, approving who they travel with.

We spend our lives giving guidance, providing protection and offering advice (whether sought or not) and here they are off into the wider world without our knowledge or experience to rely on.....how fantastic that they are spreading their wings starting their life journey……but how very dare they!

So what can we do?

Most current travel insurance policies provide cover for emergency medical expenses, repatriation and trip cancellation (if the cancellation option is selected or included as standard), but what about the rest? The policy excess that applies to each claim, the help line opening hours, the support available in the call centre pre and post purchase, will differ from company to company.

It is generally fair to say that the cheaper the policy the less cover options are available, it usually also means that the excess payable in the event of a claim is higher. This may be ok for a baggage claim but what about emergency medical cover, would your child or young adult be able to pay a large excess as a deposit to a hospital or clinic in day 5 of a 7 day holiday? My own experience of travelling at a relatively young age was that by day five the eating out had been reduced to a shared plate of the local delicacy dish and lots of whatever came for free or was cheap!

Travel insurance is about choice, which is why Coverwise offer four levels of cover. If you are driven by price, are not interested in the ‘extras’ and feel comfortable with an excess of £200 on areas such as a medical claim, we have the budget options of Bronze and Silver; both have higher excesses, less cover options and lower limits than our more comprehensive policies, the Gold and Platinum.

If you are looking for higher levels of cover for greater piece of mind such as £15,000,000 for emergency medical expenses, up to £400 for emergency baggage replacement, extra cover for flight delays and lower excesses (£60 on the Gold or £50 on the Platinum), then maybe spending that extra few pounds up front will offer you the comfort that you need?

To view a full comparison of the benefits, levels of cover and excesses that apply to Coverwise policies, please feel free to complete a quotation on the quick quote facility, the price of the options will be delivered to you immediately. If you would like to talk things through or ask questions we have a team of call centre agents ready to assist during our normal office opening hours with an average of 16 years of travel insurance experience per agent.
